The Christian music scene has been growing as more and more believers step out and use their musical gifts for Christ. In this post, we highlight five women of different backgrounds and ethnicities who have proven successful in various genres by serving God with their talents.
Amy Grant is one of the most well-known names in Christian Contemporary Music, and she has recorded noteworthy work in the pop genre as well. Some have criticized her for putting too much focus on her secular career but while this may be debatable, one thing is for sure–she is a talented woman with a vast platform to preach the Word of God. Grant has been on the radar for awhile now, but if you haven’t already been listening to her, there’s never a bad time to start.
HeeSun Lee is all about stepping out of the ordinary. Not only is Lee one of few female Christian hip-hop artists in the world–she also happens to be South Korean. Her three major albums are all unique, yet they carry HeeSun’s passion for changing the world for Christ. HeeSun combines powerful, faith-inspired lyrics with melodic rhythms, and it works extraordinarily well. She may not be a chart-topper, but she is definitely an artist to watch.
Some may consider gospel to be a dying genre, but CeCe Winans is proof that with the right combination of passion and talent, nothing is ever lost. With a voice that is gentle, yet soulful, Winan reaches her listeners through encouraging songs that point to the goodness of our God. Her songs often contain a classic vibe, but with a modern twist. If you’re looking for something original, yet timeless, you’ll be sure to find it here.
Mandisa’s style ranges from Christian Contemporary, to pop, to gospel and anywhere in between. The level of diversity throughout her six studio albums is incredible, but what’s even more amazing is the range and versatility of Mandisa’s voice. She has been blessed with a great opportunity and, by faith, she has taken it. If, by chance, you haven’t heard her hits on Christian radio, be sure to check them out.
Lacey Sturm got her start as the frontwoman of the Christian rock band Flyleaf. Alhough she eventually left the band, Sturm continues to sing as a solo Christian artist. Her voice is beautiful, and her testimony is even greater. Before coming to Christ, Lacey was on the verge of suicide; but now, by the grace of God, she is here to tell her story and point the world to the salvation that is found in Christ alone.
