15 Bible Verses for Anxiety: Finding Calm When You Feel Overwhelmed

Share

We all face moments when anxiety manages to rear its ugly head. Our chest tightens, or we find ourself suddenly awake at night, and our thoughts start to fill with all kinds of dreaded scenarios. Christians don’t need to feel guilty about worrying — it’s part of the human condition, a very normal response to uncertainty, fear, and exhaustion. But, glory be to God, we have a way to push back the dark thoughts and nagging worries.

The Bible doesn’t ignore anxiety. In fact, we have plenty of examples in Scripture of God’s people experiencing moments of fear and distress and even feeling emotionally overwhelmed. We see how recalling their faith in God provided them reassurance, grounding, and a reliable hope. So it should be with believers today. Whether you are facing a sudden panic attack, struggling to sleep, or just feeling the heavy weight of an unknown future, Scripture remains our anchor.

Below are 15 Bible verses for anxiety, grouped by specific experiences, so you can quickly find what speaks to what you’re feeling right now.

Verses for When You Feel Panic

Use these short, powerful verses when you need to stop a spiraling thought immediately.

1. Just Stop

“Be still, and know that I am God.”Psalm 46:10

Why it helps: When panic sets in, our instinct is to do something — to fix, to organize, to plan. This verse commands the opposite. It is a reminder that you don’t have to try to hold the world together, because God’s already doing that.

Pray this: God, I am stopping. I am releasing the need to fix this right now. I confess that You are in control, so I don’t have to be. Help me to be still and trust in you, in Jesus’ name.

2. The Exchange

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

Why it helps: The word “cast” here implies throwing something heavy away from you. You aren’t meant to carry the burden; you are meant to hand it over to God.

Action: Visualize yourself physically taking the worry off your shoulders and handing it to Jesus.

3. The Promise of Presence

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”Isaiah 41:10

Verses for When You Can’t Sleep

Read these when your mind just won’t shut up at night.

4. The Sleep of Safety

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.”Psalm 4:8

Why it helps: Insomnia is often caused by a subconscious feeling that we aren’t safe if we let our guard down. This verse affirms that God stays awake so you don’t have to.

5. The Gift of Peace

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”John 14:27

6. The Sweet Sleep

“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.”Proverbs 3:24

Verses for Fear of the Future

For when you are worried about money, work, or “what comes next.”

7. The Ultimate Antidote

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”Philippians 4:6-7

Why it helps: This is the most searched verse for anxiety for a reason. It gives us a formula: Prayer + Thanksgiving = Peace. It promises a peace that doesn’t make logical sense — that’s a peace that exists despite the circumstances.

8. God’s Good Plans

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”Jeremiah 29:11

9. Decide Not to Worry

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”Matthew 6:34

Pray this: Lord, give me the grace to live in the next 24 hours only. I trust You with tomorrow, with next week, and whatever else may come. Give me enough strength for today, in Jesus’ name.

Verses for When You Feel Weak or ‘Not Enough’

10. Perfect Strength

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”2 Corinthians 12:9

11. The Spirit of Power

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)

Why it helps: Anxiety often makes us feel fragile or “crazy.” This verse reminds us that our default setting in Christ is a “sound mind” (self-discipline). Fear is an intruder, not your identity.

12. The Refuge

“The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.”Psalm 9:9

Verses to Memorize

These are good verses to use as your phone wallpaper or even as notes that you can read and re-read, as needed.

    • 13. Psalm 56:3: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
    • 14. Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid… for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
  • 15. Psalm 94:19: “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”

Just Remember…

Reading these Bible verses isn’t a “magic spell” that makes life easy, as our relationship with God relies on faith. But remembering and praying these Bible verses on a regular basis helps support our faith and can put us in the habit of automatically turning to God first. Every time you replace a fearful thought with a truth from Scripture, you are physically rewiring your mind to trust in God’s gift of peace.
