Many Christians have been watching the war raging in the Middle East after Hamas militants attacked Israel and the Jewish state retaliated. Some Christians who like to watch for “signs of the times” tend to wonder what the Bible says about Israel in the end times.
What Is Happening in Israel?
The Mideast conflict is complex, with a long history of violence and tension, as this article explains. An incident likely set off the most recent chapter in the ongoing conflict in September. According to Al Jazeera, there were clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
Then, on October 7, Hamas launched a barrage of rockets into Israel. According to The Associated Press, Hamas “stormed from the blockaded Gaza Strip into nearby Israeli towns, killing dozens and abducting others in an unprecedented surprise attack….” Israel then retaliated by launching airstrikes on Gaza. According to BBC News, thousands of people had been killed and injured in the war.
Christians tend to interpret any “wars and rumors of wars” involving Israel as a “sign” approaching end times.
What Is the End Times?
The phrase “end times” refers to events and conditions that indicate the end of the age or the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Sometimes referred to as the “last days” or the “eschaton,” the end times is a theological reference popularized by Christian interpretations of the Bible. Christians believe the Bible teaches that the end times will be a time of great upheaval. But they believe it will also be a time of hope and salvation for believers.
The branch of theology that looks at the end times is known as eschatology, a Greek term that refers to the “last things.” Christians who follow eschatology believe many last-day events will unfold in the Middle East and tend to study prophecies about Israel in the Bible.
What Are Signs of the Times?
There are certain “signs of the times” for Christians that point to the end times. The signs are not meant to predict the exact date and time of the end. Instead, the signs are supposed to serve as warnings to believers to be prepared.
According to the Bible, some of the “signs of the end times” include:
- Wars and rumors of wars (Matthew 24:6-7)
- Earthquakes, famines, and pestilences (Matthew 24:7)
- False christs and false prophets (Matthew 24:24)
- Lawlessness and increasing wickedness (Matthew 24:12)
- The gospel being preached throughout the world (Matthew 24:14)
There are other “signs” listed in the Bible. However, because of the ongoing war in the Middle East, those who follow the Bible’s eschatology may be focused on “wars and rumors of wars.”
What Christians Believe About the End Times?
Christian teachings on the end times vary. For example, not all Christians take the book of Revelation as literal prophecy. Others who view it as prophetic believe it speaks of things that have already happened in human history. And then you have others who believe the events written in Revelation have yet to unfold.
But, of course, Revelation is not the only prophetic book or section of the Bible that speaks of the end times. For example, the book of Daniel is another prophetic section popular with Christians who follow eschatology.
Due to the popularity of eschatology, one can imagine how many books have been written about Israel and the Bible. Below is a list of books for those curious about what the Bible says about Israel in the end times. These books should offer a broad sampling of what some Christians believe will happen leading up to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
Please note that we do not endorse any of these books. Our list of these end times books is based on reviews and popularity.
