Kirk Franklin said his new 2023 album “Father’s Day” was a very personal project. The 19-time Grammy Award-winning producer, songwriter, and artist’s “Father’s Day” album is his first new solo project in years.
Franklin released “Father’s Day” on October 6. His last solo album was 2019’s Grammy Award winner “LONG LIVE LOVE.”
The “Father’s Day” CD features ten tracks, including the singles “Needs,” “Try Love,” and “All Things.” Kirk Franklin wrote and produced the entire album. It features guest appearances from Le’Andria Johnson, Chandler Moore, Tori Kelly, Jonathan McReynolds, Jekalyn Carr, Kelontae Gavin, and Maranda Curtis.
In an interview with BET, Franklin said that the album is the most personal project he has ever done. He said that he was inspired to make the album after reflecting on his relationship with his father — whose true identity he recently uncovered.
Franklin shared recently that he finally found his actual birth father after 53 years.
He told PEOPLE magazine that his life was “horrific” before his music career. The gospel star felt abandoned as a child after his teen mother gave him up for adoption. Then Franklin was eventually introduced to a man his birth mother said was his father. However, it wasn’t until he was a successful recording artist that Franklin confirmed the identity of his real father — who had lived in Franklin’s neighborhood the entire time.
“To live over half a century with somebody who lived in the same city as you…” Franklin told PEOPLE. “I suffered so much as a young man without guidance. I struggled with love, intimacy, faith, identity. And to know that the answer was less than 10 minutes away.”
“Father’s Day,” Kirk Franklin’s new 2023 album, combines traditional and contemporary gospel music. It also features a mix of R&B and hip-hop influences.
Critics and fans alike have lauded Frankli’s “Father’s Day” album, which debuted as no. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart, making it his 14th no.1 charting album.
