NWN: Lee Daniels’ Faith-Based Horror Film ‘The Deliverance’ — Inspired by True Events — Hits Netflix This Summer

This is a News With Nicola story.

Finally! The faith-based horror film inspired by true events directed and produced by Lee Daniels is almost here.

If you follow Faithfully Magazine, you might recall a report we did back in 2022 on a new Christian horror film directed and produced by Lee Daniels for Netflix.

Well, the movie, called “The Deliverance” (not “Demon House”), has finally been given a release date.

According to Netflix, “The Deliverance” will hit the streaming platform on August 30.

In addition to the streaming date, we’ve also got more details about the movie, which is inspired by true events.

Here’s the synopsis from Netflix:

Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother fighting her personal demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start. But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children. Inspired by a true story, THE DELIVERANCE is directed by Academy Award nominee Lee Daniels and stars Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Mo’Nique in a genre-defying take on darkness, possession, and finding a higher power.

So “The Deliverance” is a “genre-defying take on darkness, possession, and finding a higher power.”

According to an Essence interview with Daniels, “The Deliverance” is “a story told with a mix of faith, horror, and trauma.”

Though we’re calling this a “Christian horror film,” the director known for the hit movie “Precious” told the publication that his take with “The Deliverance” isn’t really about horror at all.

“I think that we’re in a dark time and we need to find our higher power, albeit Buddha, Jesus, Allah, somebody,” Daniels told Essence. “Everything I’ve done, either as a producer or director, has been something that I feel is timely to the moment we’re in. It’s not looking at it as a horror movie, but rather a movie about trying to find your higher power and about me trying to find my higher power too. Through this process, can I get closer to Jesus for me?”

It sounds like viewers of diverse faiths will be able to appreciate the spiritual elements of “The Deliverance.”

Be sure to watch the video to see my original 2022 report on “The Deliverance,” which highlights the real-life elements behind the movie.

Will you be watching “The Deliverance?”
