Jubilant Sykes, the celebrated baritone known for his commanding presence in both the opera and gospel music worlds, was killed in his Santa Monica, California, home on Monday, December 8. He was 71.
Authorities have arrested his son, Micah Sykes, 31, on suspicion of murder.
According to the Santa Monica Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call reporting an assault at the Sykes residence late Monday evening. Sykes’ wife, Cecelia, was present at the scene. Upon arrival, police found the singer suffering from critical stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Micah Sykes was taken into custody without incident at the home. While a motive has not been officially released, police statements and family sources cited in reports indicate Micah had a known history of mental illness. He is currently being held on $2 million bail.
Sykes was widely revered for a career that refused to be boxed in. While classically trained, he was known for bringing a “gospel-hued” intensity to the operatic stage. He famously played the Celebrant in a Grammy-nominated recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass and performed at the world’s premier venues, including the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, and the Apollo Theater.
However, Sykes was best known for his spiritually rooted performances. He often spoke of his singing as an extension of his Christian faith.
“My singing is like breathing—it’s an extension of me,” Sykes told NPR in a 2002 interview. “I don’t think of it as extraordinary. It’s my passion.”
According to local reporting by FOX 13 Seattle, members of Grace Community Church in Santa Monica, where Sykes was a longtime member of the music ministry, expressed shock and grief, describing him as a faithful congregant whose generosity matched his artistry.
In a statement to People magazine, his management company, ACM 360 Artists, called the influential artist “a true inspiration” whose “deep Christian faith perspective was the foundation of all that he was.”
Sykes is survived by his wife, Cecelia, and their three sons. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
