Sexual Abuse

Recy Taylor was on her way home from church when she was kidnapped by a group of White men on September 3, 1944. Taylor was subsequently brutally raped, but her assailants went free after two trials that were heard by all-White, all-male juries.

The recent #ChurchToo hashtag is a clear sign that the church has failed to protect those who have been sexually abused within its walls. Too often, victims of abuse become scapegoats so that the reputation of the church and its leaders carry on unscathed.

Sexual abuse is a growing Protestant problem, as institutional assumptions and procedures tend to protect predators and harm victims.

An AP investigation of U.N. missions during the past 12 years found nearly 2,000 allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation by peacekeepers and other officials around the world.
