A Christian petition rebuking religious attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris has received more than 13,000 signatures.
A petition by the organization Faithful America, a left-leaning group that opposes Christian nationalism, raised concerns about some attacks against Harris from conservative Christians.
“Now that Vice President Kamala Harris is the presumptive Democratic nominee who will take on Donald Trump, the far-right—including some pastors—has gone into overdrive, twisting Scripture to attack her with vile racist and sexist slurs like ‘Jezebel,'” the petition reads.
It states that “Christian-nationalist leaders” have cast Harris “as Jezebel, a Biblical character long used as a racist and sexist trope to attack powerful women.”
President Joe Biden ended his presidential campaign on July 21 following weeks of pressure from other Democrats concerned about his ability to defeat former President Donald Trump in November amid voter concerns about his age and polls showing him trailing the former president in key swing states.
Biden endorsed Harris, who has quickly secured the support of most Democrats to become the nominee, with the convention taking place this month. Polls show a tight race, with Harris gaining ground in recent days as she builds enthusiasm among the Democratic voter base.
